Cardiovascular Pharmacology

The activity of drugs on the heart and blood vessels make up cardiovascular pharmacology, a majority medical practice for which physicians will eventually develop an understanding should they choose to treat. These include :

    • Anticoagulants or blood thinners
    • Antiplatelet agents
    • Thrombolytic agents
    • Angiotensin-converting enzyme
    • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
    • Diuretics
    • Calcium channel blockers
    • Vasodilators
    • Digoxin

They are frequently recommended as anti-hypertensive to lower blood pressure, an important risk indicator for cardiovascular disease. These drugs include diuretics, which lower blood pressure and water and reduce bodily fluids in general. Losartan with enalapril: via relaxing blood vessels, these medications reduce blood vessel pressure by working on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Metoprolol along with other beta-blockers lowers heart rate and reduces contractility. Amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, relaxes vascular smooth muscle, which lessens the heart’s work.
